I'm out of the classroom! Here's some info!

Hello there! I am out of the classroom until Wednesday, so here are the spelling words and a link to the math homework just in case there is a mix-up.

And the pdf of the math homework that you can print out:

I hope this is helpful! I'm off learning about digital leadership in the hopes that I can bring back some great stuff to help our students learn!

Week 3!!

Hi Everyone! Welcome to week three here in 3rd grade. We've started off the year pretty well here in Room 19. I've really enjoyed getting to know everyone and figuring out our class' strengths and weaknesses. I just wanted to give a little update on some things happening here in class.

This week we started our science unit on rocks and minerals. Today we investigated three different types of rocks and then tried to guess what their names were based on our observations and descriptions from the book. I am looking forward to all the great things we will be discovering about rocks and minerals in the coming months.

In math we have been cruising along with multiplication and division. We are using Engage NY curriculum, and so far students are showing great improvement! This curriculum really breaks down the math and asks students to explain their thinking. I am enjoying teaching it on a daily basis.

In reading we are learning about the courts this week. We have also learned types of sentences and about jumping to conclusions. We are working on some writing about our favorite places, and hopefully next week in technology we will begin to type those up. This will be a crossover activity with Mrs. Wolpe's art class where students will illustrate their writing.

I've enjoyed the year so far, and look forward to our upcoming field trip on October 7. We will be headed to OSU to learn about wood and forestry! This is a fun field trip and we learn A LOT!

Thanks for catching up with us here in Room 19!

Welcome Back!

Hello Everyone! Welcome back to school this year! I sure had a great summer and am looking forward to the coming year in third grade. I know that it will be full of learning and fun. This year we have changed homework to a nightly thing, with the page sent home due the next day. I think this will be a great way for students to learn responsibility and reinforce the things we have learned at school that day.

This summer I had many adventures! I thought of my students while I was out exploring our great state and wondering about all the wonderful things they must be doing too. I went on three large hikes: Smith Rock, Cascade Head, and South Sister. My family loves to explore, so it was quite exciting to see these new places. At the very end of my break my husband and I went and picked up our newest family member as well. We now have a beautiful little yellow lab named Vinny.

I'm very excited about all that lies ahead for this class. Third grade is a huge year in school because of all the growth that happens. Math adds multiplication and subtraction, reading moves on to more difficult concepts, and our writing becomes much more elaborate. All these changes are exciting and challenging, and that is what makes third grade so special.

Check back here for updates on our projects and exciting events! Here's hoping we have an excellent year!

That's my brother Isaac, me, and my uncle Mat on top of South Sister.

Isaac and I ran a 5k this summer, and he ate a whole watermelon while he ran!

A few things to update!

Hello out there! We have a few things going on in class to share about! First of all, I will be adding a new round of biography videos to this post from some students that have finished. Also, I wanted to share the following link:

This link takes you to a live feed of Earth from the ISS! NASA has attached 4 cameras to the outside of the ISS that stream live all day long. This morning we watched the Earth go into a sunset phase and at the same time the moon rose! We were also asking questions of other people watching the stream and talking to people around the world who were seeing the same thing that we were! This is a very neat opportunity for us Earth dwelling folk to see the world in a whole new way.

Upcoming in class we are about to transition from our science unit on birds to a unit about flying machines and how they stay aloft. We will probably focus on airplanes and how wings work, relating it back to our bird unit. We are also going to be giving speeches about the birds that we studied. I have most students working in pairs, but due to some turn over, I have a few that will be giving solo speeches. I am hoping that all the sharing we have done this year will help ease their worries about standing up and talking in front of their peers. I've got to say, this class is very confident when it comes to explaining their thinking and sharing ideas. I look forward to listening to them teach us about their birds.

Here are some more videos that students made:
